The Medal is 36mm in diameter. The straight clasp non-swivelling suspender is attached to the medal with a single-toe claw mount and a pin through the upper edge of the medal.
On the obverse of this medal is the uncrowned effigy of King George VI. facing left. Around the perimeter is the legend “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.”
On the reverse are a lion and a lioness flanking an oak sapling and a crown. The start and end years of the Second World War are at the sides (1939 on the left and 1945 on the right), and wavy lines representing the sea are below the lions. The words “THE DEFENCE MEDAL” (in two lines) appear below the wavy lines.
The ribbon is 32mm wide. The centre of the ribbon is flamed-coloured (12mm), and the edges are green, which symbolises the enemy attacks on Great Britain’s green and pleasant land. The two narrow black stripes (1mm) represent the blackout in Great Britain.
This is an unmounted medal which is supplied along with 20cm of loose ribbon in a plastic case. If you require this medal to be mounted ready to wear please visit our Medal Mounting Page.
